ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the clinical features and factors of fundus lesions in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS)in Shenyang and the relationship between fundus lesions and CD4+T cell count.METHODS: Retrospective case study. A total of 74 cases with AIDS who were treated in the Central Hospital of Liaoning Electric Power Supply Co., Ltd., from January 2021 to December 2021 were selected. The fundus manifestation and CD4+T cell count of the patients were analyzed.RESULTS: The total detection rate of fundus lesions in AIDS patients was 58%. CD4+T cell count in the patients with fundus lesions was significantly lower than that in the patients with normal fundus [29(6, 55)/μL vs. 76(35, 103)/μL, P<0.01]. The rate of fundus lesions was the highest in the patients with CD4+T cell count ≤ 50/μL(74%). Logistic regression analysis showed that as the CD4+T cell count increased, the incidence of fundus lesions decreased(OR=0.977, 95%CI 0.964~0.991, P<0.01).CONCLUSION: Fundus lesions in AIDS patients related to CD4+T cell count. Decreasing CD4+T cell count was a risk factor of fundus lesions for AIDS patients. Routine fundus examination is important for the early diagnosis of fundus lesions in AIDS patients.

ABSTRACT

At present, cancer is still one of the most serious threats to human health. Despite the wide application of multiple cancer therapies in clinical practice, the therapeutic effects of most cancers are still far from satisfactory. In recent years, the discovery of regulated cell death may be a good first step on the road to treat cancer. Ferroptosis is triggered by lipid peroxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in cell membrane catalyzed by iron ion. It has been widely concerned as an emerging target for cancer therapy. With the booming of biomedical nanotechnology, ferroptosis as an emerging therapeutic target has attracted extensive attention. Here, we review the advance on the intersection of ferroptosis and biomedical nanotechnology. First, the research background of ferroptosis and nano-preparation as well as the feasibility of ferroptosis-based nano-drug delivery systems (nano-DDS) for cancer treatment are presented and analyzed. Then, the strategies for inducing ferroptosis based on nano-DDS are summarized, mainly including: the promotion of Fenton reaction, the inhibition of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX-4) and the restriction of the cysteine-glutamate exchange transporter (system Xc-). Furthermore, the combination therapy strategies based on biomedical nanotechnology induced ferroptosis are also discussed. Finally, we shine the spotlight on the prospects and challenges of ferroptosis-based nanotherapeutics in clinical application.

ABSTRACT

@#AIM: To compare the pre-and postoperation results of flash visual evoked potential(FVEP)and pattern visual evoked potential(PVEP)and to discuss the significance of FVEP and PVEP examinations in assessing postoperative visual acuity in senile cataract patients. <p>METHODS: During the period of June 2015 to May 2016, 68 cases of senile cataract patients(79 eyes)were treated in our hospital. This research analyzed the changes of pre- and postoperative FVEP and PVEP results and compared the preoperative FVEP, PVEP, FVEP combined with PVEP results with the postoperative best corrected visual acuity(BCVA). <p>RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference in the incubation time of P2 wave and the amplitude of N2-P2 wave of FVEP pre-and postoperative examination(<i>t</i>=0.448, -0.492; <i>P</i>>0.05), there was statistically significant difference in the incubation time of P100 wave and the amplitude of N75-P100 wave of PVEP pre-and postoperative examination(<i>t</i>=2.505, -5.462; <i>P</i><0.05).The incubation time of P2 and P100 wave before operation were significantly negatively correlated with the postoperative BCVA(<i>r</i>=-0.694, -0.402; <i>P</i><0.05). The amplitude of N2-P2 wave before operation was significantly positively correlated with the postoperative BCVA(<i>r</i>=0.607,<i>P</i><0.01). There was no significant correlation between the amplitude of N75-P100 wave before operation and the postoperative BCVA(<i>r</i>=0.237,<i>P</i>>0.05).Consistent rate of FVEP examination was 83.54%, that of PVEP was 66.67%, the difference was statistically significant(<i>χ</i>2=5.11,<i>P</i><0.05).Consistent rate of FVEP combined with PVEP examination was 90.74%, that of PVEP was 66.67%, the difference was statistically significant(<i>χ</i>2=9.34,<i>P</i><0.01). <p>CONCLUSION: By comparision, FVEP is better and more accurate than PVEP in predicting the postoperative visual acuity. Preoperative FVEP together with PVEP examinations can effectively and objectively assess postoperative visual function recovery of senile cataract patients whose corrected visual acuity of the proposed surgical eyes before operation is ≥0.1.

ABSTRACT

AIM:To discuss the application value of retro-mode imaging by F-10 confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (cSLO) for detecting drusen in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD).METHODS:This was a retrospective case study.During the period of October 2015 to December 2016, 67 patients with unilateral AMD (67 affected eyes and 67 fellow eyes) were included in this study. All patients underwent color fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and retro-mode imaging by F-10 cSLO.The features of drusen by color fundus photography, OCT and retro-mode imaging were comparatively observed in the affected eyes of patients with unilateral AMD.Positive numbers of drusen in the fellow eyes of patients with unilateral AMD detected by color fundus photography, OCT and retro-mode imaging were calculated and compared.RESULTS:Retro-mode imaging by F-10 cSLO gave easier to identify images of drusen than color fundus photography and OCT in the affected eyes of patients with unilateral AMD.In the fellow eyes of 67 patients with unilateral AMD, retro-mode imaging showed drusen in 56 cases(84%), color funds photography showed drusen in 36 cases(54%), OCT showed drusen in 48 cases(72%), the difference was statistically significant(χ2=14.31, P0.0125).CONCLUSION:Retro-mode imaging by F-10 cSLO provides a non-invasive technique and should be useful for detecting and monitoring drusen in AMD.
